History of the cooperative

生産者のホームページへ

The history of the cooperative is closely linked to the wave of Italian immigrants, particularly those coming from Friuli and surroundings. In their home country they were already active in wine growing and very much accustomed to cooperativism. These immigrants first settled in the province of Cordoba. However, soon they found out that the agricultural land was not really suitable for wine growing. The quality of the wine and the yields were disappointing. That was the reason why they decided in 1940 to move on to the province of La Rioja where they settled down. Wine growing in this province has a long history. The first grape-varieties were introduced by the Spaniards (first in Peru, then in Chile and finally in La Rioja). This also explains how different grape-varieties managed to adopt themselves very well to the local ecological and climatologically circumstances. The producers built a small bodega or wine cellar and started to buy grapes to transform them into wine. Shortly hereafter they also started to plant vineyards. In 1989 about 90% of the coop’s members were situated in the province in La Rioja and 10% was still active in the Cordoba-region. That was the reason why the members decide to split up. From that moment on the Cooperativa Vitivinifruticola de La Rioja Ltda. came into being. Till about ten years ago all attention was focused on how to continuously increase the yield but since then producing high-quality wines has become the focal point of the coop’s strategy.

The coop’s members

At present the coop has about 510 members. Most of them are small producers although there are some middle-sized and big producers as well. The socio-economic profile of the members varies: very small producers who only have a vineyard of 1 hectare or less, till big producers who own more than 75 hectare. The common opinion is that in order for wine growing to be an attractive economic alternative one should at least possess 10 hectare of vineyard or more.
