Enshi Yulu Organic Tea Farm
Enshi prefecture in Southwestern mountainous region of Hubei province locates our organic and FLO certified fair-trade tea project Xuanen Yulu Organic Tea Farm, where has been famous for tea growing since the time of Lu Yu (618-907 AD) who wrote the first systematic tea research book Tea Classic in Tang Dynasty. Lu Yu was also a Hubei province native. The famous Qingjiang River spreads in between the mountains and finally flows to Yangtze River.

The main tea varietals grown here are the small leave varietals good for green teas (like green needles, dragon well, wulu, yulu, gunpowder and Meecha etc.) and the famous small leave black congou incl. Keemun, Yi Congou etc., since recent years new tea types are developed by introducing the medium leave white and oolong tea varietals. It has been certified organic by IMO SWISS since 2006 according to EEC Reg 2092/91, USDA-NOP Rule and Japanese JAS, and it has been fair-trade certified by FLO since January 2007.

The Xuan En Yulu Organic Tea association covers six tea gardens in six natural villages. The tea gardens are largely contiguous tea farms that can be easily monitored through an ICS; the smallest tea garden has 18 member households, the largest 142 members. The association has 507 members, all members are small producers, most farmers manage less then 20 mu (1.3 ha) and solely rely on family labor or on labor exchange with neighbors. Most members of the association belong to the Tujia ethnic group, some to the Miao ethnic group. Fair-trade funds have supported the development of local organic tea production and gradually raised the local farmers incomes, helped the poorest local students to continue their education, improved the local traffic condition, reconstructed the facilities of the water usage and provided drinking water for the local villagers.
