ケニヤのバラ パンダフラワーのフェトレード事業について
1束(5本) 750円の値段のうち約12円が、フェアトレード奨励金として、パンダフラワーの会社の労働者700名で構成される「パンダ自立グループ」と経営者と労働者の代表で構成されるフェアトレード・ジョイント・ボディー委員会の銀行口座に切花輸入業者が、振り込みます。2006年は115,496.00 Euros(1900万円) 2007年は、205,347.00 Euros(3400万円)という大きな金額です。パンダフラワーの一番安い労働者の月収は、93ドルですから、大変な額です。地方自治体レベルの収入です。
チリも積もれば山となる。 私たちが購入し続ける限り、毎年この奨励金は約束されています。数年単位のODAやNGOの支援プロジェクトより継続性にすぐれ社会発展への貢献が期待されます。 パンダフラワーの従業員だけに恩恵が偏らないように、地域の発展のために使われています。

T.ソーラプロジェクト(2005年―2007年)
700人の労働者の家に労働者も4000円の負担を行い、太陽熱発電パネルと蓄電池、3個の電源を設置しました。 実施額:2300万円

@雨水を利用してナイバシャの町の4つの小学校(生徒数:2460人)に、1校に1万リットルのタンク2個を設置

FAIR TRADE PROJECTS PANDA SELF HELP GROUP
A.Completed Projects
1. Solar Energy project (2005-2007)
So far it has benefited 700 employees.
The project entails giving a solar panel, battery, charge controllers and 3 lighting tubes.The worker was to pay 25 Euros which is 10% of the cost of the items. The amount spent so far is 140,000.00 Euros.
Water Harvesting Project(2005-2007)
Entails provision of 2 water tanks per school of 10,000 liters each to Four primary schools
within Naivasha town for harvesting rain water. The schools are:-
(i)Nyondia Primary school has a population of 840
and pupils. Cost of tanks and installation was 1,540 Euros
(ii)Kangari Primary school
with a population of 420 pupils.Cost of tanks and installation was1540 Euros.
(iii)Naivasha Highway Primary primary school. Population of 650 pupils.2 Tanks each with a capacity of 10,000 liters. The cost of tanks and stands was 2,100 Euros.
(iv)Naivasha Lakeview Primary school.
Population of 550 pupils.2 Tanks each with a capacity of 10,000 litters. The cost of tanks and stands was 2,100.00 Euros.
(v)Naivasha Day Secondary School (2007).
These project entailed donation of tanks,pipes and laboratory taps.The Panda J.B. donated 2 tanks each with a capacity of 3,000 liters, pipes and taps. The school had a reliable source of water though it had not been piped. The school is now able to store and use water in an easier manner. The total cost of these project was 1,430.00Euros.
(vi) Longonot Township Secondary and Primary school, there was an acute shortage of water storage facilities. They wrote a proposal to Panda Self Help Group J.B who in turn donated 2 tanks each with a capacity of 10,000 liters. The total cost of the tanks and gutters was 2,027.00 Euros.
Classrooms Rehabilitation 2005-2008)
This project envisages building classrooms and rehabilitation of existing ones. The project is targeting 6 primary schools. So far the primary schools which have enefited, they are:-
(i)Longonot D.E.B (2006)which previously didn’t have permanent windows and doors. The school currently has secure doors and windows courtesy of Panda Self Help Group project. The total cost of the Project was 4,000.00 Euros.
(ii)Lakeview primary school(2006), Panda Self Help Group constructed a classroom whose cost was?? Ksh.370, 000.00.These contributed to decongestion of pupils in the school which is currently over populated with few classrooms. The classrooms was fitted with 50 lockers which cost Ksh.90, 000.00.Panda Self Help Group also donated a water tank at a cost of 750 Euros ?and fitted water gutters at a cost of 470.00 Euros.
(iii)Classroom at Naivasha Highway primary school(2007), the J.B identified there was also a shortage of classroom facilities and these had been due to government’s provision of free and compulsory primary education. A classroom has been constructed at a cost of Ksh.530, 000.00.Panda Self Help Group also donated a water tank at a cost of 750 Euros and fitted water gutters at a cost of 470.00 Euros.
(iv)Construction of classroom at Gituamba Primary School (2007),
Panda Self Help Group constructed a classroom at Gituamba secondary school. The classroom was equipped with lockers and chairs and the total cost for the project was
7255.00 Euros.
(v)Construction of Classroom at Manera Primary School (2007)
Panda Self Help Group constructed a classroom at Manera Primary school. The school is currently congested with pupils especially those who have been displaced by elections related violence. The classroom was fitted with lockers and the total cost was 6,140.00 Euros.
DONATION TO NAIVASHA CHILDREN SHELTER (2007):
Panda Self Help Group donated a fridge, freezer and 70 pcs of mosquito nets to Naivasha Children shelter which caters for orphans and street children in Naivasha. The shelter had approached P.S.H.G. for assistant. The items were presented by the group and general manager. The cost of these donations was 9,700.00 Euros.
RECREATION:
DONATION OF FOOTBALL KITS (2007):
Panda Self Help Group donated uniforms and other training equipments to Panda Football team. This was to enable the team train better and nurture their talents. The project cost was 1,190.00 Euros.
DONATION OF UNIFORMSTO PANDA FLOWERS VOLLEYBALL TEAM(2007):
Panda Self Help Group donated uniforms and other training equipments to Panda Volleyballs team. This was to enable the team train better and nurture their talents. The project cost was 730.00 Euros.
Loan to Panda SACCO:2005-2006:
Panda Sacco is a savings and credit cooperative society managed by Panda Flowers employees who are also members of Panda Self Help Group. Due to its rapid expansion, the Sacco board approached Panda Self Help Group for loan assistance. The J.B agreed and loaned Panda Sacco 16,700.00 Euros which will be repaid within 3 years with an interest rate of 6% for 1 million and 5,500.00 Euros is interest free
Donation to Internally Displaced People(2008).
Following the disputed 2007 General elections, there was tribal violence which rocked the whole country. Many people were displaced and in Naivasha area there were IDP camps. Panda Self Help Group was approached by various humanitarian organization and churches which included Kenya Red cross Society, Aphia II, Anglican church among others. In order to assist alleviate the human suffering, PSHG donated food stuff (30 bags beans), Sanitary towels, disinfectants and soaps at a total cost of 2,670.00 Euros. This donation was channeled through the various organizations.
ONGOING PROJECTS:
Training of J.B Member -2003-Continuing
This is a capacity building project whereby individuals and J.B members are trained and equipped with necessary skills to manage and run sustainable projects. The trainings are held regularly .The first J.B training was held in 2003 and since then more than 8 more trainings have been held with diverse needs ranging from leadership, financial management, projects identification, gender etc. This is usually an on-going project and normally equips trainees with the skills required to manage the projects. Total amount spent for this project is about 9,400.00 Euros.
Vaccination:(2003-on-going)
These project entailed vaccination against Typhoid and Hepatitis B. So far 1000 of the employees of Panda Flowers Ltd have been vaccinated against the diseases. The diseases preference is very high in the area. This is a continuous project and aims at ensuring the whole work force is vaccinated. Total cost of the project so far is 2,800.00 Euros.
Bursary( 2004-on Going Project)
These projects entails awarding bursary on merit to Panda Flowers employees
Secondary, tertiary and university school students. At the moment the project is
sponsoring 34 students. The project is a breakthrough for most students who otherwise
wouldn’t have enrolled in secondary school. +The project has so far been very successful
and the total amount spent so far on it is 6,600.00 Euros.
Posho mill Project:(2004-On going Project)
Provides workers &surrounding communities with maize flour at accost effective price.
The posho mill building also houses the J.B office and has a meeting room where various
workers committees meet. This project is already self sustaining.
It has also created employment for those working at the project. The cost of building and milling machines was 53,000.00 Euros.
Plots Project(2005-Continuing)
Premium money used to procure 30 Acres of land which was later sub-divided into individual plots of 50 by 100 ft to Panda employees who were interested.Benefited 221 employees plus 3 acres set aside for communal social amenities i.e. nursery school, borehole, dispensary and a shopping centre. So far the amount spent on the project is 66,700.00 Euros.
In 2008,following suggestions by the workers,PSHG laid out a plan for the second phase which the group has already identified 18 acres piece of land.50% of the payment has been done
HOUSING PROJECT(2007 on going):
Following the success of plots phase 1,P.S.H.G. started an ambitious plan of constructing low cost and decent houses for the workers. In order to accomplish this ultimate goal, P.S.H.G. partnered with Habitat For Humanity Kenya. So far 4 houses have already commenced being constructed. This is a four year project and at the end 220 houses will have been completed and occupied.
Donation to Friends of Naivasha Womens Hospital:- 2005:
These were a donation to the proposed hospital to cater for women health care needs. Panda Self Help Group contributed 16,700.00 Euros.
Investment in Stocks Project: 2006:
Panda Self Help Group undertook purchase of shares from the national electricity generating company (Kengen).Being an initial offer, the J.B applied for 42,000 shares at a price of Ksh.500, 000.00.Panda Self Help Group was allotted 6,341 shares worth 853 Euros.
In 2008 following another public offer by Safaricom,P.S.H.G applied for 400,000.00 shares worth 22,200 Euros.
H.I.V AIDS AWARENESS CAMPAIGN(2007):
Panda Self Help Group has been in the forefront in the fight against HIV & AIDS pandemic.
In 2006 the P.S.H.G purchased 3 billboards worth 1,100 Euros which were mounted at the farm.
The group also coordinated the launch HIV & AIDS policy of Panda Flowers Ltd at a cost of 230.00 Euros
TREE NURSERY PROJECT(2007):
Panda Self Help Group implemented this income generating project with the main aim of environment conservation. The project involves planting of certified? tree and flowers seeds which are grown in PSHG nursery and later sold to workers and others interested at a reasonably lower price.
WORKERS TRAINING COURSES:(2007)
This project entails furthering of education for Panda Flowers workers through enrolment to various courses. Premium fund caters for 30% of the tuitions fee whereas the worker pays the balance of 70 %.The amount budgeted for this project this year is 3,300 Euros.
DONATION OF FLOUR TO UPENDO VILLAGE(2007):
This project is a continuous one whereby Panda Self Help Group donates 350 kg of flour to Upendo Village once per month .The organization caters for people infected with HIV &AIDS. The institution is located around Naivasha town and supported by different organizations and churches. The amount spent monthly on this project is 200 Euros
VEGETABLES PROJECT(2007):
Having successfully been able to run the poshomill project, the J.B. embarked on the vegetable project. This project entails planting of vegetable seeds in the nursery and later transplanting it to the farm. These projects are at Panda Flowers farm and it’s in the initial stages. The first harvest is expected by November 2007.Among the vegetables planted includes:-
-Kales.
-Spinach
-Cabbage
The cost incurred so far on these projects is 400 Euros.
